With her musical career now reaching a span of seven decades, Asha Bhosle is renowned as the voice behind for a number of Indian cinema's greatest musical hits. Her back catalogue includes over 12000 songs in 20 different languages and a number of different styles. Versatility is an understatement.
First Film: Though she sang her first song back in 1943 for a Marathi film called Majha Bal, Asha’s rise to popularity was a slow-burner due to continually being in the shadow of elder sister Lata Mangeshkar. It wasn’t until the late 60s when she met her future husband, music composer R.D. Burman, that Bhosle truly came in the spotlight with evergreen hits such as 'Aaja Aaja', 'Piya Tu Ab To Aaja' and 'Yeh Mera Dil'.
Claim to fame: The World Records Academy recognised her as the "Most Recorded Artist" in the world in September 2009. In 2011, she was officially acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist in music history. The Government of India honoured her with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. Take your pick.
Did you know: Asha is also an excellent cook, with Bollywood celebrities such as the Kapoors often requesting her to cook for them. With this hobby, she has opened restaurants in Dubai and Kuwait named after her.
Ticket to Hall of Fame: In 1997, the Britpop band Cornershop paid tribute to Bhosle with their international hit 'Brimful of Asha'. Though her sister’s popularity is unprecedented, she still can’t claim to have had a song named after her.
