Interesting article. I am surprised that people were so blatantly insensitive about your background in Australia, even at university and even after that? I mean, people are supposed to have grown up by then, aren't they? I hate to say it but perhaps the people who say that Australians are racist against Indians have a point.

I think your uncle was just being smart. He was using the situation to his advantage. There was no point in him getting too worked up about it, he just made it work for him, and was probably a lot more profitable for it. It's the smart move.

I also think that if stereotyping is taken by one party then the other party should be able to take it back. For example, if an aussie calls you out for being Indian, you should be able to talk about "throwing another shrimp on the barbie" or some such thing. It has to go both ways or else it is unfair and unbalanced.

However, given that most desis are a minority in these countries it is difficult to stand up to these comments all the time. In an ideal world, however, they should be addressed and handled at the time, in my opinion.

That’s a very thoughtful post. But, as Lakshmi Rajan has put it, take advantage of the stereotype. I know even a lot of students from a particular country who take advantage of such stereotypes.

Its K. You have to understand that they make their own fun too, shows like southpark for example, lots of stereotypes about own, so its just their way to try getting mixed up. All you can do is say like they do in return. Thank you, come again or say something that makes them zip lips. All I do is What? what? what? I didn’t catch that
