It is after all a 'precious' commodity! Whether it is losing 'flavour' among NRIs is a different question...but back home in India, gold is still a huge safety net for many people! That's why we are the biggest consumers of it... Gold is an important hedging tool with currencies and oil…but unlike their value (which appreciates and depreciates depending on the state of public finances) gold is a tangible asset and will NEVER lose it sheen. There seems to have been a lot of adverse publicity for this sort of venture. But not all companies operate that way, there are some reputable ones also. But being Asian I think just sticking to traditional style of jewellery shop is best, because of the special nature of Indian jewellery, the fact that in the UK you will get a good price and sometimes you can even exchange items for new styles.
